At Canmore Dental Centre, we believe that maintaining a healthy mouth plays a vital role in overall health. Preventive dentistry services from oral examinations and cleanings to cancer screenings and x-rays help our dentists to spot developing issues before they become more serious.
Visiting our office twice a year for routine oral exams gives Dr. Maier or Dr. Phillips the opportunity to identify any oral health issues and make a plan to treat them accordingly.
During the exam, we will take a close look at the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Your exam may also include dental x-rays, oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures as necessary.
Oral Cancer Screening
Here at Canmore Dental Centre, we use VELscope technology to screen our patients for signs of oral cancers.
Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During your exam, we will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer which are difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Oral Health Care at Home
Good at-home oral hygiene including brushing twice a day and flossing daily, combined with regular dental exams, plays a key role maintaining not just your smile, but overall general health.
Either before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will perform a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums to prevent and treat disease.
To begin, they will use a scaler to remove any tartar and plaque build-up. Next, they will use a polisher and coarse toothpaste to remove any leftover stains or plaque, followed by a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.
Dr. Maier or Dr. Phillips may also recommend a fluoride treatment if you or your child has a high risk of tooth decay. Fluoride is a natural mineral that is able to help rebuild the minerals in the tooth's enamel and prevent or reverse tooth decay.
