At Canmore Dental Centre, Dr. Siobhan Phillips is qualified to provide Botox® as a therapeutic treatment option.
What is Botox?
Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is a purified protein that can be used in dentistry.
When injected into the facial muscles, it releases neurotoxins, preventing the muscles from contracting and helping them to relax.
Our dentists are qualified to administer Botox to temporarily relax a patient’s muscles, producing therapeutic benefits.
Using Botox, our dentists provide therapeutic treatments for our Canmore patients to resolve pain associated with clenching or grinding teeth and headaches.
Treatment of Jaw Pain or TMJ Pain
For patients who are unable to tolerate or unwilling to wear a night guard while they sleep, Botox for clenching or grinding may be a good option.
Botox treatment may also be an effective treatment for patients who have recurring jaw or TMJ pain, despite wearing a night guard.
Stress and strain causing pain in the jaw and TMJ can be relieved when Botox is injected into the facial muscles that are involved in clenching or grinding, thus minimizing or weakening the muscles.
Treatment of Headaches
Due to their bite or clenching and grinding, many people suffer from various headaches including migraines or migraine-like headaches.
Many types of headaches can be reduced or eliminated with the use of Botox treatment.
Prevention of Daytime Teeth Damage
Night guards can be quite effective and well-tolerated for most patients who clench or grind their teeth, however, it is usually not practical to wear an appliance during the day.
Unfortunately, patients who tend to clench or grind during the night will most likely clench or grind during the day as well.
Therapeutic Botox treatment weakens the jaw muscles to reduce the tendency to break teeth or dental restorations like fillings and caps.
